Student Health & Wellness plans

1. Expand Trauma-Informed Care on Campus

Background Explanation: Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is geared towards providing support services and creating environments in a way that is accessible, inclusive, and appropriate to those who may have experienced some form of trauma. TIC is centered around preventing inadvertently re-traumatizing individuals. Becoming trauma-informed is about supporting people to feel safe enough in their interactions with services.

Training & Practices
  • Expand trauma-informed care training: Most of our specialists in the student counseling center are trauma-informed trained, however, this type of training can be expanded to other departments within the Health Center and other medical officials.

  • Trauma-informed investigation MUPD/ improve policing in the Residence Halls

    • We want to ensure that MUPD officers are incorporating trauma-informed investigation into their practices and policies. A “trauma-informed” investigation is based on the belief that officials should not subject victim-survivors to reliving such disturbing experiences without an empathetic ear.  Information on trauma-informed trained officers should be disclosed on the MUPD website so that students can identify which officers have received this training.

    • When comes to officers entering the residence halls, it is our goal to ensure that they are following the correct protocol and notifying the necessary authorities like the RD and RA’s designated in the building. Also, we need to establish a clearer set of guidelines for when an officer should be called when responding to an incident in the hall.

Services
  • Provide the university with 24/7 sane kit examinations to ensure that these types of services are more accessible to our students

    • Sane kit: made to gather DNA evidence and document injuries sustained during an attack

    • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner: a registered nurse or nurse practitioner who has completed specialized training to assist sexual assault victims

  • Expanding TeleHealth Counseling services beyond the Miami campus for students

    • Currently, there are some restrictions due to state licensing and policies that would prohibit our counseling services from being provided to students out of the state and out of the country. Therefore, we want to work with the Health Center and Counseling Services to partner the university with vendors or other services that specialize nationally/internationally in counseling to provide our students with support and help whether they are in-state or out of state.

2. Strengthen University's Response towards COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Efforts

  • Communication Efforts

    • We can increase our use of visuals, graphics, and social media presence to encourage students to do their part in keeping themselves and others safe.

    • We propose incorporating texting in the University's outreach plan because emails may get misplaced in a student's inbox and we want to ensure that students receive the alerts to get tested in an easily accessible way.

  • Distribution of the Vaccine

    • Implement a system to survey the community when it comes to plans to get vaccinated considering we cannot require people to get vaccinated. Through the survey, we want to identify barriers and to know what is holding people back from getting tested or vaccinated.

    • We would like to implement a mass vaccination campaign to provide educational materials to students.

  • Institutionalizing Wellness Across Departments (Beyond COVID-19)

    • We propose institutionalizing wellness across departments on campus through a permanent health and wellness committee between students/ faculty which would stick with us long after COVID-19. This committee would help create programming and promote resources wich support COVID compliance behaviors.

  • Increasing Accessibility and Support for Students in the Classroom

    • Addressing and fixing student concerns as it relates to issues with internet access, use of subtitles, teachers slowing down their speech, modality, making sure professors are adhering to university guidelines when it comes to missing class and make-up work.

      • It is important to advocate for alternative study sites for International Students because of the consistent issues that they face with Canvas and Google Access.

3. Advance SIV Prevention Education and Training in Greek Life

Background: Sexual assault is a very pressing issue on Miami University campuses and unfortunately there are several communities that are statistically disproportionally affected by the consequences of interpersonal violence. Therefore we are seeking to enhance Miami University's involvement in campus-wide SIV prevention, education, and response efforts.

  • Greek Life Education & Training

    • Greek life happens to be one of those communities that is often disproportionately affected by the consequences of interpersonal violence. We recognize that they make up a big portion of our university population. Therefore, we want to ensure that these leaders are helping to lead to fight against SIV and learn to become effective bystanders. It is our desire for individuals and the respective organizations to effectively serve as advocates and know where resources are both on and off-campus. This will help break down stigmas surrounding reporting and sexual assault on campus.
    • We want to partner with SASS, Women Helping Women, and other services in getting members of the greek community involved in a facilitated deliberation that would take place for each University-affiliated chapter individually, during a chapter meeting at any point during the fall semester to allow maximum participation and scheduling flexibility. The goals of the deliberations include SIV topical education, increasing understanding of others’ perspectives, the realization of personal or group impacts, community awareness and accountability, and increased responsibility.

  • Our goal of this initiative is to get as many members of Greek Life community involved and committed to leading the change on campus. This initiative can be expanded towards other areas through the University, such as Seal Workshops, etc.
