Community Engagement plans

1. Create an Advocacy Fund

  • It is our goal to create a new fund geared towards advocacy/activist work both on and off-campus. Our university is in need of an appropriate mechanism to help better support student-led social action groups in their mission to hold our elected officials accountable at the state and federal levels of government.

  • This fund can be established through reallocation of student fee money or most importantly by way of our generous alumni/partnerships with businesses looking for ways to give back.

    • This fund could potentially be used for internal or external purposes related to social activism:

      • Internal: We could utilize miami Resources (alumni donations) to support advocacy and activist movements on campus for materials, transportation, marketing, and more etc.

      • External: Allow Students to work together in donating towards this fund: by the end of the year students would vote on which charitable organizations the fund will go into

2. Advance Support and Protection Efforts for International Students & Undocumented Immigrants

  • We, as a university, must take additional steps towards supporting and protecting undocumented students/students who hold Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. We must ensure that all Miami students receive a campus, classroom, and community experience free of hostilities, aggression, and bullying. Miami University is committed to the development, growth, and success of all of our students, without regard to national origin, race, ethnicity, or any other characteristic that makes them unique.

  • We must develop the proper protocol to “instate itself as a sanctuary campus"

    1. Declaring Miami University a sanctuary campus

    2. Ensure the Office of Multicultural Services on the Regional Campuses and the Office of Diversity Affairs on the Oxford campus have the appropriate informational resources to support undocumented students

    3. Look into providing legal aid when needed for all students, including DACA students, international students and students from marginalized communities.

3. Increase Community Service and Philanthropic Events

  • Partner with the Greek Community, Office of Res Life, and Student Activities in efforts to compile an accessible list of opportunities and resources to engage in public service/projects around Oxford and abroad. This would be an open-source for all students to engage.

  • Engage Greeks and other non-Greeks organizations to work together in making an impact on the community both in and out of Oxford

  • Advance class consciousness (civil discourse) and programming
